Quick Answer

You can play solo or in a squad in online PvPvE. For an MW4 DMZ solo deployment, turn off Squad Fill before you deploy. Story missions take place on a live server with other Operators, so going alone still leaves you exposed to rival players.

Solo and single player describe going into DMZ alone; multiplayer describes the shared server. PvE, PvP and PvPvE describe the threats you encounter there, rather than how many teammates you bring.

How do you deploy solo in MW4 DMZ?

Turn off Squad Fill before deploying if you want to go in alone.

  1. Turn off Squad Fill.
  2. Deploy into Hajin without filling your squad with teammates.
  3. Choose a mission or explore, keeping other Operators in mind as well as hostile forces.

Going solo lets you choose your own objective, but it does not make nearby Operators solo players. One player going in alone has encountered duos and trios, so avoid judging a rival group's size by your own party size. Get familiar with the MW4 DMZ Hajin map before choosing where to head.

Can you play MW4 DMZ story missions solo?

Yes, story missions support solo players as well as squads, inside the same online DMZ world.

You can tackle objectives without bringing a team. Other Operators are pursuing their own missions on that server, though, so a mission destination is still somewhere you might encounter another player. See MW4 DMZ story missions when choosing your objective.

A solo run can include a pickup task and a helicopter extraction:

Pick up the mission item

For the hard-drive task, remove the hard drive from the trunk.

The mission hard drive is at the trunk during the solo deployment.

Board the extraction helicopter

You can leave by helicopter while playing alone. One solo player chose to board and leave before reaching the lieutenant, saving that objective for another run.

Is MW4 DMZ PvP or PvE?

DMZ is PvPvE: hostile forces and rival human Operators share the conflict zone.

TermWhat you face
PvEHostile forces
PvPRival Operators
PvPvEBoth in the same zone

You can engage hostile factions, move covertly to limit escalation, or pursue other Operators. A rival squad can also be competing for the objective or extraction opportunity you want.

Solo describes your deployment, not a private story mission. MW4 DMZ missions take place in a world where other players can cross your route, even when your own goal is a PvE objective.

Can you join another squad in MW4 DMZ?

Yes, you can use the Ping Wheel during a deployment to request a Truce or join another squad through assimilation.

Bring up the Ping Wheel for these actions. Proximity Chat also lets you talk to nearby Operators; the wheel gives you visual commands when voice communication is unavailable or you want to stay quiet. A Truce is a request, so do not treat sending it as protection from the other players.

Joining a squad during the match changes who you are playing alongside. Two players who each deployed alone can meet, talk and decide to become teammates.

Why is MW4 DMZ called solo, single player and multiplayer?

These names describe different parts of the same DMZ experience: your party and the server around it.

  • Solo: you deploy without teammates and handle your own objectives.
  • Single player: players use this wording for a run they play alone, including picking up mission items and extracting.
  • Multiplayer: other human Operators are on the live server, completing their own missions and potentially fighting you or joining you.

You can finish a solo deployment by boarding the extraction helicopter, then choose what to attempt next. For your next run, read the MW4 DMZ tips and decide whether to keep working alone or bring a squad.
