Quick Answer
Start with a Free Loadout or a rifle you loot, and refill at Ammo & Armor Caches. Don't burn cash on a fancy gun early. For a first build, one player runs a Han 86 with just a suppressor and a scope to clear AI quietly. Pick Equip Free Loadout in Ready Up; custom builds open at the FOB Gunsmith at DMZ Level 10.
What Are the Best MW4 DMZ Weapons to Start With?
Use a Free Loadout or an assault rifle you take off an enemy. Build up your Stash first. Don't sink cash into a gun you might lose on the first run.
One player says the Han 86 is worth leveling: "It's very easy to use and you find them all over the place." Their build is just a suppressor and a scope. The suppressor is for the AI: kill quietly, duck into cover, take the next one.
Another player says the guns basic enemies drop are "more than usable." An assault rifle with a decent sight carries you through the early content. Their advice: save your cash for FOB upgrades. Spend big on a gun, lose one bad fight, and the gun is gone.
In high-threat areas, suppressed shots, throwing knives and melee kills keep you quiet. The Han 86 build is one player's pick, not a proven meta. It's a solid place to start.
Multiplayer and DMZ tune weapons separately. A gun that's great in Multiplayer isn't automatically the DMZ meta.
Once you've picked a gun, pack the rest of your kit:
| Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Plate Carrier | Armor |
| Backpack | Item storage |
| Weapon | Offense |
| Medkit | Wound repair |
Gun's ready but no meds? Check Medkit and gear preparation before you deploy.
How Do You Make MW4 DMZ Builds?
Build and modify guns at the FOB Gunsmith. It unlocks at DMZ Level 10.
The Gunsmith menu at the FOB, where you put your build together.
Shown at 166:46 in MrDalekJD’s video.- Pick a gun you brought back or can buy. A gun you extract with can be modified as that one gun.
- Level the gun to unlock attachments. Weapon levels are shared between Multiplayer and DMZ, so attachments you unlocked in Multiplayer show up in DMZ too.
- Buy attachment slots with DMZ Cash. Buy normal slots in any order. Each extra slot costs more.
- Pay for each attachment. Unlocking an attachment only lets you buy it. It still costs DMZ Cash.
- Think about a backup Primary or Secondary. That gives you a second gun for different fights. Need help with a build? Gunny can help.
A base M4 costs around 5,000 DMZ Cash, before slots and attachments. That's just the M4. Check the price of the gun you actually want.
| Weapon context | Attachment limit |
|---|---|
| Gunsmith customization | Up to five attachments |
| Weapons found across Hajin | Up to eight attachment slots |
Extracting with a gun doesn't let you buy that gun again. To buy replacements, find its Weapon Manual and extract with it. For the full difference, see unlocking weapons and using the Gunsmith.
Keep your first build simple. The Han 86 player's suppressor and scope is a clear starting point, and you don't have to fill every slot. Camos and stickers are free to apply, so looks don't eat into your attachment budget.
How Do You Get an MW4 DMZ Free Loadout?
Pick Equip Free Loadout in the Ready Up Menu to get basic gear for one deployment. Extract and you keep it.
- Go into deployment prep and reach Ready Up.
- Pick Equip Free Loadout to put on the basic kit.
- Check what you're carrying before you ready up.
- Extract to keep the gear and build up your Stash.
This is the move when you're short on cash or can't fill your loadout from the 3D Printer. One player's tip: "run them if you are just starting out and just want to learn." You build reserves instead of risking your stored gear right away.
Equip Free Loadout: Recommended When Building Your Stash
Ready Up hands you basic deployment gear. Start here when all you want is to get into a match and bring useful stuff home.
Owned Weapon Blueprint: One Free Use
A Weapon Blueprint you own works once for free in the DMZ Gunsmith. Lose that copy on a run and it's gone for good. You can buy the same blueprint again with DMZ Cash, cheaper than building the same gun from scratch.
Vault Edition Signature Weapon Collection blueprints work the same way: one free use, then a discounted rebuy if you lose it.
The Free Loadout and a blueprint's free first use are two different things. Owning a blueprint does not mean unlimited free replacements.
How Does MW4 DMZ Ammo Work?
Your HUD shows what's in the chamber or magazine plus your total reserve. Ammo & Armor Caches refill ammo and give you Armor Plates.
| HUD reading | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Chamber or magazine ammunition | Loaded rounds |
| Reserve ammunition | Total backup rounds |
| Secondary Weapon display | Second weapon's ammunition count |
Check both loaded rounds and reserves before the next fight. A bigger magazine only changes what one mag holds, so keep an eye on your reserve too.
To resupply:
- Find Ammo & Armor Caches around Hajin. They're often inside enemy-held compounds, so deal with the enemies near the cache before you push in.
- Use the cache to refill ammo and grab Armor Plates. After that it goes on cooldown before you can use it again.
- Check your Backpack for an Ammo Box. Carrying both Ammo and Armor Field Upgrade boxes? Swap between them in the Backpack Menu.
One player ran dry mid-run: "Actually out of ammo... we probably should bring in ammo crates." Bring a resupply option so you're not waiting until your reserves hit zero.
A cache you just used won't refill you again right away. Check your reserves after resupplying before taking another fight nearby.
Got gear worth keeping? Plan your exfil or Fulton extraction and bring it home.
FAQ
Use free gear or a looted assault rifle and keep your cash. One player runs the Han 86 with a suppressor and scope to clear AI quietly.
Hit DMZ Level 10 to open the FOB Gunsmith, then spend DMZ Cash on slots and attachments. Your weapon level decides which attachments you can buy, and that progress is shared between Multiplayer and DMZ.
Pick Equip Free Loadout in Ready Up. Extract and the basic gear is yours to keep.
No. A blueprint you own has one free use in the Gunsmith. Lose that gun and you buy another copy with DMZ Cash at the blueprint discount.
Don't assume it is. DMZ and Multiplayer tune weapons separately. Shared attachment unlocks don't mean shared weapon balance.
Hit an Ammo & Armor Cache on Hajin for ammo and Armor Plates. Each cache goes on cooldown after you use it. If you carry an Ammo Field Upgrade box, you can switch to it in your Backpack.
