Quick Answer
Complete the gear and target practice task, then deploy with free gear to learn the extraction loop. At deployment selection, choose Dynamic Operations if you want objectives to follow while you learn. These MW4 DMZ tips focus on getting you into a first run without immediately risking your starting equipment.
What should you do first in MW4 DMZ?
Start with your current DMZ task: equip gear, shoot the targets, and follow it into your first operation.
- Complete the equipment and target practice task.
- After the tutorial, put the gear you equipped back into storage if you want to preserve it.
- Interact with the deployment selection point and choose a deployment style.
- On the deployment screen, select free gear for your early attempts.
The deployment screen includes a free gear selection option.

How does MW4 DMZ work?
You deploy solo or with a squad, choose objectives, loot and fight, then extract with what you can carry.
At Select Deployment, you have three options: Story Missions, Dynamic Operations and Free Roam.
Select Deployment, with Dynamic Operations between Story Missions and Free Roam.

Choose Dynamic Operations when you want a starting contract and objectives to keep following. Completing those objectives awards XP and gives you a reason to move around the map.
Free Roam: choose your own goal
Choose Free Roam when you want to enter DMZ without a preset objective and spend the run however you like.
Story Missions: prepare before committing
Choose the story mission option when you want to pursue a story objective. Some story missions have DMZ tasks to complete beforehand, so work through the relevant tasks and prepare your equipment first. Follow MW4 DMZ story missions when you are ready to focus on those objectives.
A story mission can still involve other players. One player ran into other squads during a hospital story mission. See MW4 DMZ solo for the solo and squad side of deployment.
DMZ orders also help teach you the game, taking you to locations and introducing features. You can progress them while doing other activities, so keep them in mind during a deployment rather than treating them as something that always needs a separate run. For those objectives, head to MW4 DMZ missions.
Which MW4 DMZ tips and tricks help you prepare?
Use free gear early, and make medical supplies a priority when you assemble your own loadout. A practical packing recommendation is at least two bandages, a first aid kit if possible, a weapon, lethal and tactical equipment, armor, and a backpack.
| Item | Suggested preparation |
|---|---|
| Bandages | At least two |
| First aid kit | Bring if possible |
| Weapon | At least one |
| Lethal and tactical gear | Bring if possible |
| Armor and backpack | Bring if available |
Bandages alone won't restore lost health; that needs a first aid kit.
Keep a medical kit for after a self-revive. Players report that self-reviving leaves you with reduced maximum health, while a medkit restores it and gives you another self-revive opportunity. Going straight back into danger without recovering can turn the next knockdown into the end of your run.
